5 Things to Know About the ‘Blood Moon’ Lunar Eclipse in Georgia

March 13 @ 11:57 pm – March 14 @ 4:47 am
When to Watch – The lunar eclipse begins late THURSDAY NIGHT, March 13, at 11:57 p.m. The partial eclipse starts at 1:09 a.m. on Friday, March 14, with TOTALITY PEAKING at 2:58 a.m. The eclipse ends as a partial shadow by 4:47 a.m.
Why It Turns Red – The Moon takes on a reddish hue because Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths (blue/violet) while allowing longer wavelengths (red/orange) to pass through, bending around Earth and casting a red glow on the Moon—just like a sunrise or sunset!
No Special Equipment Needed – Unlike solar eclipses, you don’t need special glasses to view a lunar eclipse. Just step outside and look up! TAKE A COOL SELFIE!
Weather Matters – A clear sky is key for the best viewing experience, but our local forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies, so be sure to check conditions before heading out.
Legends of the Blood Moon – Many ancient cultures had myths about lunar eclipses. The Inca believed a jaguar was devouring the Moon, while Norse mythology blamed sky wolves. Look up for more legends and myths.
Make It a Moon to Remember! – GCPS has a Digital Learning Day on Friday, so no mandatory early wake-ups! Stay up late with a Lunar Late-Night Picnic (grab “Moon Pies” and hot cocoa), light up the night with glow sticks, or capture the moment with a Selfie with the Moon
