48-Hour Film Fest (Ages 12+)

July 19 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

“48 hours to write, shoot, edit, and upload a film! Come to the Duluth library between 6 and 7pm on Friday, July 19th to register yourself or your team to take part in the library’s first 48-Hour Film Fest. The theme, act, or situation that must be included in the film will be announced at 7pm when the clock begins. Participants only need to be at the library for registration and theme announcement. Films must be uploaded by 7pm on Sunday the 21st to be accepted. Read the rules below!”

RULES:

  1. Registration will begin at 6pm on Friday, July 19th and go until 7pm when the countdown begins. Registration will only be in-person and will be the only time when participants are required to be at the library. Those who did not make it to registration and wish to partake will be allowed to register, per the discretion of the facilitators, by emailing the Learning Labs.
  2. There will be either a theme, situation, or act that must be included in the film, or face massive point deduction.
  3. Any films uploaded after 7pm on Sunday the 21st will be automatically disqualified, unless anyone from the crew has contacted the facilitators and given an acceptable reason for the delay.
  4. Participants may enter solo or with a crew. There must be a crew representative who takes responsibility for being the point of contact. The crew representative must be at least 12 years old. If under 18, a parent/guardian must be present at registration.
  5. At least the crew representative must be present for registration. They may register for other members of the crew and specify their role(s). A participant can only be a crew representative once. A participant may hold any numbers of roles in a single crew. A participant with small roles may be on a total of two crews, example: crew 1 role – production assistant, crew 2 role – minor acting role.
  6. Films may have co-directors.
  7. Crew members can be added after the start of the countdown. The finalized crew list will be submitted with the film.
  8. Films can be live-action or animated.
  9. Films must be at least 45 seconds long, not including credits. There is no maximum length.
  10. Films must be mp4 or mov files. If we cannot play and view the film, it may be disqualified. Films can be any resolution.
  11. Credits are not mandatory, but are a plus.
  12. Films must contain appropriate content and be equivalent to PG-13.
  13. Films will be uploaded through a Google form. Each film will be submitted with a submission form and a video release form, signed by the representative, and a parent/guardian if under 18.
  14. For judging, crews will be split into one of three categories based on the experience level of the main crew (director/DP). Categorization will be at the discretion of the facilitators. A breakdown of each category will be posted on our website before the competition and at registration.
  15. The film submitted must have been made for the Summer 48-Hour Film Fest. Writing and all aspects of film production must have started after the countdown began. The film cannot include video from any previous projects. Exception: Using already-existing audio is acceptable.
  16. Use of media from other sources is not permitted unless those clips are in the public domain, or you have received permission from the copyright holder. If you have obtained the rights to use a piece of media, documentation must be submitted with your film. Submitting a film with copyrighted content and failing to include documentation may result in the film being disqualified or significant point deduction. This includes content created with AI.
  17. Films must not infringe third-party’s rights and cannot contain the following: obscene material, defamatory statements about any person, company, organization or entity. Films may not invade privacy or other rights of any person, company or entity, and may not in any other way violate applicable laws and regulations.
  18. Participants may use Learning Lab resources, including use of Recording Studios and equipment. Normal Learning Lab rules for reserving and using the Labs will still be in place.
  19. As of now, there are no plans for a screening.
  20. THERE ARE NO AWARDS OF ANY KIND FOR PARTICIPATING/WINNING THE 48-HOUR FILM FEST.
  21. These rules are subject to change at the discretion of the facilitators. The most up-to-date rules will be posted at registration.
