Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd each year, is a fun and quirky tradition where a groundhog, such as Punxsutawney Phil and Georgia’s General Beauregard Lee, is said to predict the arrival of spring based on whether or not it sees its shadow.

If you’re looking to celebrate Groundhog Day, here are some ideas:

  1. Watch the Groundhog Day Ceremony:
    • Tune in to the live broadcast of the official Groundhog Day ceremony in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. General Beauregard Lee’s Ceremony will start at 7:30 am at Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson, GA. (80+ miles south of Gwinnett)
  2. Groundhog Day Movie Marathon:
    • Watch the classic movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray. It’s a comedy that revolves around a man reliving the same day over and over again. Consider making it a marathon by watching it repeatedly, just like the protagonist in the film. (It’s currently on Amazon Prime but will also be on TV for Free on Friday.
  3. Host a Groundhog Day Party:
  4. Groundhog Crafts:
    • Get creative with groundhog-themed crafts. You can make paper plate groundhogs, create shadow puppets, or even design your own groundhog out of clay or playdough. See Craft Ideas on RedTedArt
  5. Predict Spring’s Arrival:
    • Make your own predictions about the arrival of spring. Write them down and seal them in an envelope. Open the envelope later to see how accurate your predictions were compared to Punxsutawney Phil’s or Beauregard Lee’s. Groundhog’s Day Graphing & Printable Worksheets
  6. Outdoor Activities:
    • If weather permits, spend some time outdoors. Take a nature walk or hike and enjoy the changing seasons. Consider having a picnic with traditional winter and spring foods. Pick a Park in Gwinnett

  1. Learn About Groundhogs:
    • Take the opportunity to learn more about groundhogs. Research their habits, habitats, and why they became associated with predicting the weather. Share fun facts with friends and family.
  2. Groundhog Day Cupcakes or Cookies:
    • Bake a treat shaped like a groundhog or one decorated with the prediction of an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
  1. Read Groundhog Day Books:
    • If you have children, read Groundhog Day-themed books together. There are plenty of children’s books that tell the story of the tradition of Groundhog Day.
