STEM | Science, Spiders, and the Wolbachia Mystery

March 28 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

“Learn about Joro spiders and the remarkable effects of the Wolbachia bacteria infection.

Joro spiders are infected with Wolbachia bacteria. These bacteria, which are not directly harmful to humans, are widespread among spiders and insects and have remarkable effects, including feminization, male-killing, and allowing infected females to clone themselves.

Georgia Gwinnett College’s professor of biology, Dr. James Russell, will discuss Wolbachia in general and the research findings at Georgia Gwinnett College on the infection in Joro spiders found in Georgia.

Registration is recommended.

Dr. James Russell received his doctorate in entomology (ecology and evolution) from the University of California – Riverside. His teaching and research interests revolve around the broad fields of evolutionary biology and ecological interactions, with a particular interest in symbiotic interactions.
